Mindfulness as a Treatment for Diabetes and Weight

The focus of most of the studies of mindful eating and drinking has been weight loss rather than diabetes but losing weight is very important for all with type 2 diabetes because it makes managing the disease easier.

Eating and drinking mindfully are perhaps the most important keys to managing the diabetes. When we are mindful of what we put in our mouths, we can satisfy our hunger and thirst better than when our minds are preoccupied with something that happened in the past or the thing that might happen in the future.

The best tool

Bringing our weight down to normal is the best tool to manage the Diabetes. With every pound of weight we lose, it becomes easier to keep our blood glucose at the level where it doesn’t inevitably lead to the complications of diabetes or any related disease. The best practice of mindful eating is to put down the fork or spoon that we use to eat our meal. When we slow down and savor each bite, we don't have to eat so much in light of the fact that the nourishment has a lot more taste to us.

Slow food

Food that we eat slowly has more taste to us than when we mindlessly eat a lot of the most expensive and delicious fast foods. It’s a trade-off between quantity and quality. Eating slowly is important when we are eating with other people. The mindful way to eat with someone else is to wait until the other person stops talking. Then, during the time period to your turn to talk, have a bite to eat. Of course, this will slow down the meal and another way of eating mindfully.

Practice Monotasking

Other distractions from mindful eating are television, reading, and most commonly smartphones. These are most common examples of multitasking. We need to avoid such distractions while eating. We need to practice monotasking instead.

Drinking mindfully

This same rule applies to drinking too. We need to drink in mindful way as same during eating foods. Perhaps we need to be even more mindful of what we drink because it’s so easy to a lot of drink calories.

Studies show that especially when we drink soda, fruit juice or soft drinks we consume more calories that day. Alcohol of course also has calories and that is even more problematic than soda or soft drinks because it loosens your awareness, making you even less mindful.

Eating right

Eating and drinking mindfully can help you lose weight and therefore make it is the easier way for you to manage your diabetes but eating right also matters. Eating right is partly being mindful of what you are eating, partly eating the right food in right amount.

Begin Anew

A more sensible objective is to be more careful that you have been. You will foul up, and that will likely happen each day. When you do, acknowledge that you've slipped and simply begin once more
